The super-nutrient is popping up all over the place, and for some people confusion along with it. CBD unfortunately often gets conflated, incorrectly mind you, with other substances that people are more worried about. This time on the PRōZE blog we are going to answer that question we see crop up all the time, ‘What is CBD oil made from?

What is CBD Oil Made From

There’s a quick answer to this that you’re likely looking for – yes, CBD is made from Cannabis sativa. But stopping there would not give you the full picture. CBD is just one of over 100 different types of compounds found in cannabis called cannabinoids. The cannabinoid most people are familiar with (though they might not know it) and the one that has them confused is Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, and that is the compound that delivers the ‘high.’ So while

marijuana might get someone high, that’s because marijuana is made up of all the cannabinoids including THC. CBD is a small fraction of the plant distilled into a useful form. CBD delivers incredible health benefits without that high.

Ok, with that addressed, let’s take a step back and talk about how CBD develops on the plant.

How CBD Forms

CBD is found naturally in the resin structures of the plant, coating the flowers in tiny, almost mushroom like shapes called trichomes. Inside the trichomes is where all of the cannabinoids are formed. Their job is to act as a sort of defender: protecting the plant from heat, ultraviolet radiation, antifungal and bacterial, and even deters predators. It provides a whole host of benefits to the plant to allow it to grow healthy, go figure that it could have huge health benefits for us as well!

How do you get that great CBD oil?

Since CBD exists in, essentially, an oily state naturally the only thing left to do for us to begin to harness its power is to extract it into potable form. There are a few ways to do that.

Extracting CBD

CO2 Extraction

Perhaps the most common method commercially, the CO2 method is an incredibly safe way of harvesting the exact cannabinoids sought after. While at room temp carbon dioxide is a gas, it can be manipulated, via temperatures and pressure, into a more liquid like form. This allows the CO2 to be used as a solvent, to pull out and extract the CBD from the plant matter.

The pressure is then lowered, allowing the CO2 and CBD to separate into their two forms, the gaseous CO2 and the CBD oil. It is not yet ready for human use however, it will go through a few processes to ensure that oil is CBD-rich, with nothing else.

Hydrocarbon Extraction

Another way of extracting CBD is to use hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are compounds of oxygen and hydrogen, though the type most commonly used for CBD extraction are butane, propane, or hexane. This method is very effective, but the nature of the solvents used can make it a more dangerous process if not done correctly.

There are other ways of extracting the CBD, but that’s not what you came here for!

Ok, ok, Wrap it Up!

So to reiterate again and put it simply, CBD oil is made from harvesting the beneficial, naturally occurring compounds from trichomes, filtering and distilling it into a concentrated form to a beneficial level. Once CBD is in its oil form it is now ready for consumption or further refinement in making other forms of consumables, like our Gumeez.

So there you have it!
